Artist Collaboration Jersey

Story Behind the Jersey

The jersey by Melissa and created in partnership with Colombian artist Theo Ulloa, is a celebration of freedom (blue), life (yellow/sun), and passion (red) that we, as humans first, then cyclists, share. The jersey is comprised of these colors, the same as that of the National Flag in pastel. The Scarlet Ibis is the shorebird featured. The Ibis has protected status globally and is the only red shorebird in the world, getting its color from what it eats. Our passion burns bright as displayed by the bird inlaid on the sun. The shards of the sun (triangles) are a play on that what we consume is part of what makes us, as is true aesthetically for the bird. In this case, Colombia has given me community. I do not “consume” Colombia, but there is communion. These shards reach out, are going towards all else. To me, the design collectively means “going to freedom” while it says “life and freedom”. This phrase is repeated twice, once over the classically imagined position of the heart and then on the sleeve, as a nod to humans often needing a reminder to go for what sets their souls on fire, live freely and well in connection and nourishment with all.

Extra special to me, the Scarlet Ibis, Corocoro Escarlata, or Eudocimus Ruber is native to Casanare Department where I have raced my two most important UCI races. The name broken down means good or excellent and red or ruddy. This jersey was created as an invitation to you all and as a thank you for being any part of my journey or community, may you each be wrapped in all things excellent no matter how messy the ride of life gets.
